HOW WE MET...

ANGELINA AND CATHY MET BY CHANCE WHILST SELLING THEIR WORK IN PENARTH, CHRISTMAS 2013. THEIR SHARED LOVE OF ALL THINGS GLASS SAW THEM DEVELOP A FRIENDSHIP & CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER.

Their first idea was to develop an Open Studio trail for any local artist/ crafter during the annual Penarth festival that following summer. It has fast become an established part of the festival & is developing year on year.

They then joined a designer-maker section in a local Penarth shop where their customer base was steadily growing. Customers embraced the idea of bespoke, locally made pieces, rather than mass produced imported ones that have saturated the marketplace. Their next logical step was to be able to work on site & pass their love of the process of hand making in glass to others. Hence, Glass By Design was born.
 

WHAT WE DO...

THE CONCEPT OF GLASS BY DESIGN WAS TO SET UP AN INDEPENDENT SHOP IN PENARTH WITH A DIFFERENCE.

Cathy and Angelina, not only wanted premises to be able to show their work, but to also produce their art on site in full view so their customers can appreciate the time and work that goes into each piece.

A teaching room allows glass classes in both fused and stained glass to be taught, and all the glass, tools and materials are available to buy on site.

Cathy and Angelina have also sought out some very special work from other 3D Welsh Makers to show alongside their own work.

Beautiful ceramics, slate, metal, stone, paper and felt all provide our customers a feast for the eyes when entering the shop.

Angelina has been working with glass for over twenty years and has gained a wealth of experience in the field. She has worked on a number of prestigious commissions and has exhibited her work widely. Whatever the requirements, she will listen and work with clients to design something very special just for them, while always aspiring to offer a very personal service. Angelina does not use pattern books and you can be assured, each piece is not repeated.

CATHY O'DOHERTY
"I get my inspiration from the things I love, be that colour, sport, landmarks, games , words & music. I quite often add text to the glass. I make all sorts of bespoke dishes, wall art and mosaics. Lately I have become the 'coaster queen' supplying local golf, tennis and sailing clubs their bespoke awards!"

Cathy is the person behind 'Cod Glass'. Based in Penarth, she has been working with glass for about 20 years. Her work is quite quirky, colourful & often has an element of humour running through it. All items are handmade in her studio. She loves to design from scratch & most items can be personalised & make a very special, unique gift.
